Title: Health and Safety Specialist
Position Type: Contract
Location: Tarzan, TX
Reports to: Director of Asset Management
Status: Non-Exempt
Compensation: $75 - $80/hr
Job Summary:
As a Health and Safety Specialist working within the commissioning phase of our reciprocating engine power plant project, you will be responsible for ensuring that all health and safety protocols and regulations are rigorously followed. Your role is essential in maintaining a safe working environment during the critical commissioning phase, where systems are brought online, tested, and integrated, ensuring the well-being of all personnel involved. The health and safety Specialist in the commissioning phase of our Reciprocating Engine Power Plant project will ensure that health and safety remain paramount throughout the project's critical phase. Your expertise and commitment to safety will be instrumental in protecting the well-being of all project personnel and the successful completion of the commissioning process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies, procedures, and protocols specific to the commissioning phase of the reciprocating engine power plant project.
  • Collaborate with project management and construction teams to ensure safety is integrated into the commissioning process.
  • Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines including applicable HSE guidelines or other company policies provided for personal protection, protection of fellow workers, and the protection of the public.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide safety guidance to all project personnel, including training and orientation for new employees and contractors.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and prepare comprehensive reports on root causes and preventive measures.
  • Maintain documentation related to safety training, incidents, inspections, and safety performance metrics.
  • Work closely with the project's emergency response teams and ensure readiness for unforeseen safety situations.
  • Stay current with changes in safety regulations, technology, and industry best practices.
  • Conduct pre-commissioning and daily safety meetings and toolbox talks to communicate safety information to all levels of project personnel.
  • Sign off as safety representative on the commissioning plan
Job Requirements:
  • Relevant certifications in occupational health and safety (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, OSHA 30-hour, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience in health and safety management in industrial or power plant settings.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively convey safety information to diverse project stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures and first aid/CPR certification.
  • Familiarity with environmental safety regulations related to power plant operations.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to conduct site inspections, which may involve walking, climbing, and lifting.
  • Physical fitness and the capability to respond to emergency situations.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to identify potential safety hazards and communicate effectively in a noisy industrial environment.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as necessary.
Education / Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, or a related field required
  • 5 years of experience in health and safety management, preferably in power plant or industrial settings.
  • Relevant certifications in occupational health and safety are a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices, particularly in a commissioning environment.
